Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are devices fitted to the exhaust system of vehicles to trap microscopic emissions and soot produced by diesel engines that would otherwise be expelled into the environment.
Like any type of filter, a DPF needs to be cleaned regularly to make sure it functions properly. DPF cleaning should occur automatically in a process known as regeneration in which the soot is burned off, leaving a white residue in the exhaust DPF area, but if this doesn’t work correctly the build-up of soot will start to cause problems. Eventually, even the ash left by regeneration will block the DPF.
